Riparian condition monitoring protocol for the Upper Columbia Basin Network. Narrative Document. Version 1.0. This protocol details the why, where, how, and when of the UCBN’s riparian condition monitoring program. As recommended by Oakley et al. (2003), it consists of a protocol narrative and a set of standard operating procedures (SOPs), which detail the steps required to collect, manage, and disseminate the data representing the status and trend of riparian parameters in the network. These data in combination with other vital signs monitoring, will provide a context for the interpretation of status and trends in riparian and stream condition. In particular, this protocol is completely integrated with stream channel morphology monitoring and water quality monitoring conducted by the UCBN. This monitoring protocol is comprised of methods developed by the United States Forest Service (USFS) - PACFISH/INFISH Biological Opinion Effectiveness Monitoring Program (PIBO). The UCBN has also adopted the PIBO protocol for stream channel condition (Heitke et al. 2008), and has developed a UCBN-specific peer-reviewed version of their protocol to guide implementation in UCBN streams (Starkey et al. 2011). Data collection for stream channel and riparian vegetation monitoring occurs simultaneously by a field crew trained to handle both sets of methods.
