Great Sand Dunes National Monument and Preserve is located on the eastern side of the San Luis Valley in south-central Colorado. A critical issue identified by the National Park Service was the need to maintain the high surface-water quality within the monument. In order to address this issue, the National Park Service has indicated a desire to pursue an Outstanding Waters Designation, which would offer the highest level of water-quality protection available under the Clean Water Act and Colorado regulations. This report describes that assessment that was conducted in conjuction with the U.S. Geological Survey in order to evaluate whether the water quality of the streams in the monument met the minimum requirements for an Outstanding Waters Designation.
