In June 2006 the author was contracted by South Dakota Dept. of Game, Fish and Parks to conduct a butterfly survey in the southern half of the Black Hills and adjacent areas during the flight season in 2006. The primary purpose of the survey was to determine the presence or absence of three species recently listed on the new Sensitive Species List and monitored by South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Natural Heritage Program; the Regal Fritillary (Speyeria idalia), Ottoe Skipper (Hesperia ottoe), and Atlantis Fritillary (Speyeria atlantis pahasapa). Emphasis was also placed on locating populations of the Arogos Skipper (Atrytone arogos iowa), another species currently monitored by the South Dakota Natural Heritage Program. The secondary intent of the survey was to collect information to be used to develop a monitoring plan for each species using a technique called "Pollard Walks" as described by Pollard and Yates (1993) and Thomas (1983). This study also provides recommendations to resource personnel so land management practices can be developed that will promote and/or enhance the existence of native butterfly species.
