his material is presented here as the beginning of a very fruitful study. It is now relatively seldom that one has the good fortune to find an Indian still sufficienty aware of his native environment to give extensive information on the flora and fauna. Amond the Makah a most unusual couple were available. The man, Luke Markishtum, has been a seal hunter, has trapped small animals for a living, and has guided ornithologists in fieldwork. When shown the colored plates of birds and animals, he was as anxious to learn our common names for them as I was to learn the Makah. "We are really just exchanging what we know," Luke said one evening, really flattering me, for my knowledge was not nearly equivalent to his. Last summer we worked out the materials presented here.
