The collection of baseline measurements of the faunal assemblages in the beach faces at the Critical Zone and at Gunnison Beach establishes a characteristic abundance and distribution of amphipods (sand fleas), polychaetes (worms), and decapods (sand crabs) present during the spring and fall of 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. Populations increased from spring to fall surveys, with the greatest quantity found at the low tide position at both times. The vast majority of organisms found were sand crabs of less than 1cm in length. Sediments increased in grain size from the upper portions of the beach face to the lower portions of the beach face, with medium sand dominating the upper tide level locations whereas the low tide level positions had larger quantities of gravel and pebbles in addition to coarse to very coarse sand.
