Porter et al. (2002) offer several suggestions for improving the performance of statistical tests based on the KZ filter for examining the presence of a linear trend in air quality time series. Numerical tests of two of their proposals were easy to implement using our existing simulation program, so we were able to investigate their operating characteristics. We report the results of this investigation here.
