This report gives a description of the events that took place during the Battle of the Big Hole. This is a historic spot, hallowed by the blood of the brave pioneers and soldiers, who fell under the relentless fire of the Nez Perce Indians in August, 1877. A grateful government has erected a magnificent monument upon the spot where they were buried and upon its surface one may read the names of those who fell. Because of liberties taken by souvenir hunters, it has been necessary to inclose the stone in steel.
