After many years of yearning for an accurate, documented historical work on the Nez Perce Campaign of 1877, with special reference to the Battle of the Big Hole, in 1958 National Park Service officials took action to that end. Idaho State College was invited to enter a cooperative agreement whereby I should produce the monograph. When the State Board of Education approved this proposal, I proceeded to fulfill the directive of securing "Firsthand knowledge from. . . survivors or descendants of those who participated in the action, and make a search of the Library of Congress and National Archives, and contact all historical sources in general."
