Bird surveys were conducted on 10 point count transects during June of 2011 to continue breeding season bird monitoring routes in Craters of the Moon Monument and the Preserve (CRMO). We detected a total of 2269 individuals of 80 species on 176 point counts. The 10 most numerous bird species were Brewer’s Sparrow (n=414), Rock Wren (223), Western Meadowlark (154), Spotted Towhee (154), Vesper Sparrow (102), Mourning Dove (100), Sage Thrasher (85), Brown-headed Cowbird (69), Lazuli Bunting (64), and Violet-green Swallow (56). Only Brewer’s Sparrow, Rock Wren, and Common Ravens were detected on all ten transects. Several other widespread species were detected on seven or more transects, including Mourning Dove, Western Tanager, Lazuli Bunting, Spotted Towhee, and Brown-headed Cowbird.
