The Mississippi National River and Recreation Area (MNRRA) is a seventy-two mile stretch of the Mississippi River between Dayton, MN and Hastings, MN. The MNRRA is within the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area (the Twin Cities). The area provides recreational activities, historical sites, residential developments, entertaintnent facilities, and serves as a resource for businesses located along the Mississippi River. The National Park Service is responsible for the development of a comprehensive management plan for the MNRRA. Previous to this study, very little was known about Twin Cities residents' opinions toward, and their uses of the Mississippi River within the MNRRA boundaries. To acquire this information the National Park Service worked with the Cooperative Park Studies Unit at the University of Minnesota to develop and execute a study of Twin Cities residents' perceptions and uses of the MNRRA resources. This study, the 1992 Mississippi National River and Recreation Area Study, had two goals: 1. To develop a knowledge base of the Twin City residents' perceptions and uses of the MNRRA resource. 2. To identify potential issues for consideration in the development of the Management Plan Alternatives for the MNRRA.
