This historic structures report focuses on three “mission essential” buildings located within the boundaries of the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park in the town of New Bedford, Massachusetts. The three structures that are the focus of this report include: The Rodman Candleworks, the Double Bank Building and the United States Custom House. The purpose of this report is to provide New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park with documentation of the construction and chronology of these three buildings. This report includes the following sections: Historical Context and Background, Chronology of Development, Current Physical Description, Character-Defining Features and General Recommendations. The report is written according to Director’s Order 28 – Cultural Resource Management Guideline, Chapter 8 and is intended to provide general guidance for the treatment of these three structures.
