This report describes how the town of Brunswick, Maryland, has been influenced by the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. The town of Brunswick has received little attention in National Park Service studies of the canal. It also has received little attention from professional and lay historians in the private sector. No book has been written on the history of Brunswick. The few articles that have been written all lack footnotes. The standard history of Frederick County (which also lacks footnotes) has little to say about the canal period of Brunswick’s history. Therefore, the primary value of this historic resource study lies in its effort to bring together what secondary sources have to say about Brunswick while adding some important primary documents that aid in the reconstruction of the history of the town.
