Nine sampling sites 4 on Western Mountain, 1 in Hadlock brook, 2 on Sargent Mountain, and 2 near Jordan Pond. "Atmospheric deposition of heavy metals is occurring in Acadia National Park, ME. This study examines the heavy metal concentrations found in the organic solids of Acadia (on Western Mt. and Sargent Mt.) to see how metal accumulation relates to predicted values for sulfur deposition for the park. I am also looking at the ways in which soil characteristics influence the ability of the soil to absorb metals. Soil characteristics tests included pH, soil organic matter, bulk density, cation exchange capacity and metal acid digest. Organic matter showed positive correlations with bulk density values, percent soil moisture values and hydrogen ion concentrations. Extremely high concentrations of calcium and aluminum from MAAD and CEC analysis were found throughout the sampling sites. Calcium-to-aluminum ratios indicate that soil acidification from atmospheric deposition is occurring throughout the park and low base saturation values on Western Mt. are putting the soils at risk of aluminum toxicity." Following from conclusion on page 38 ".. Overall, these sites have high concentrations of calcium and aluminum on the soil exhange complex, but he ratio of these two ions varies throughout the sites sampled.
