" The distribution and concentrations of Ba, Cs, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, V, and ZN vary throughout the Oi and Oa horizons of Acadia National Park. Correlation graphs suggest that soil concentrations of Pb, V, and Ni of the Oi horizon positively correlate with predicted values of atmospheric deposition of Sulfur (kg/ha/yr) for the area. Soil characteristics such as cation exchange capacity (CEC), percent base saturation (%BS), Ca;Al ratios, percent organic matter (%OM) and pH were highly variable and showed little to no correlation with soil heavy metal concentrations when graphed. Correlation graphs show a stronger relationship in the Oa horizon relative to the Oi when comparing CEC vs. ECEC; ECEC or %OM vs. hydrogen ion concentration and %OM vs. CEC. Differences in soil characteristics between the Oi and Oa layers showed a decrease in %BS, %OM and CaAl ratios with depth. When correlating concentrations of one heavy metal to another, the Oi yielded stronger correlations relative to the Oa between Ba & Cs; Pb & V; Ni & V; Cu & Ni; Mn & Zn, for which some of these atmospheric deposition may be a common mode of input. Furthermore, there are five locations I have found that me be at risk of adverse forest health due to their low %BS and Low CaAl ratios." /STUDY LOCATIONS:/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Sargent Mountain/Western Mountain/ Final sites consisted of 5 locations on Western Mountain and 6 locations on Sargent Mountain. Sample collection was during September 2005. GIS-CATEGORY 2 maps roughly depicting locations of sampling sites available as awell as some GIS coverage maps of elevation and soil type.
