Early post-glacial and holocene history of the Sargent Mountain Pond watershed, as seen from the bottom of Sargent Mountain Pond, Acadia National Park, Maine. University of Maine, Orono

This report gives a post-glacial and Holocene analysis of Sargent Mountain Pond with an interest on monitoring intense periods of pollution and assessing the impacts of such. The core samples and study period ranges over the course of 27 years (1980-2007), and included sampling at different times (1980, 2004, 2007) of cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), Mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), aluminum (Al), phosphorus (P), diatoms, and pollen. The results section discusses specific findings of each of the elements in the samples taken and provides analyses of the history and status of each within the system. The discussion section points out that there were five distinct periods in the evolution of the landscape and provides detailed descriptions of each. The conclusion re-summarizes the findings and points out the continued impacts from prior periods of intense pollution. There is a travel instruction section that describes how to get to the sampling locations in detail. /STUDY LOCATIONS/ /MOUNT DESERT ISLAND/Big Heath Bog/Sargent Mountain Pond/Hadlock Bog
