Specifically, the names of weavers were seldom noted or documented, and some of the possible reasons that this is the case are addressed by examining the history of collecting. ... The chapter takes an extensive look at the federal Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1935, which was enacted to gain wider attention, appreciation, and sales opportunities for Indian basketry, among other works of Indian art. Each of the chapters on the peninsula tribes focuses on the importance of basketry and analyzes the techniques, styles and materials that are distinctive or are common to all the tribes.
