This Standard Operating Procedure explains the procedures for constructing one ultralight folding tent-pole 1-m2 sampling frame used as part of the SECN Vegetation Monitoring Protocol. The instructions described herein are based upon those published by Rick Shory, Natural Resource Ecology Lab, Colorado State University, Fort Collins CO, located at the following link: (http://www.nrel.colostate.edu/projects/fhm/equipment/SamplingFrame/VegSamplingFrameInstructions.htm ; last updated 9 June 2009). The instructions have been edited and modified slightly for SECN-specific implementation. Aluminum tent poles are used in lieu of standard PVC pipe for the 1-m2 sampling frames as they substantially reduce the weight and bulk of the frame. The finished product collapses to an approximate size of 14 inches and weight of 11 ounces and can be secured together with inexpensive two-sided Velcro strips or carried in a small tent-pole bag. Fiberglass tent poles can also be used for a slightly lighter and less expensive frame.
