History and significance of the Seneca Aqueduct, C&O Canal National Historical Park. This report discusses the significance and history behind the Seneca Aqueduct. It is important to the operation of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and represented a major engineering accomplishment of this period. It was the first of eleven masonry aqueducts constructed to carry the canal across the larger tributaries of the Potomac River between Georgetown and Cumberland, Maryland.
