This report covers the history of Lock #66 on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, including the existing conditions of the Lock in 1967 and treatment recommendations. This was one of seven locks under one construction contract, started between May 1838 and December 1839 and not completed until sometime between 1848 and 1850. Details of the construction history are also identified. A primary construction problem encountered in building the locks was a lack of good building stone in the area. The lock walls between the gates were lined with wood to protect the small stones in the walls from the boats. Remnants of the wood gates at both the upstream and downstream ends still remained. Some portions of the gates exhibited severe damage due to rotting, and most of the gate hardware was missing. Although it is in a remote location, a carpenter's shop was located at the site of this lock. A creosote dip tank was located at the north end of the building to treat timber. The report recommends that the lock be cleaned of silt and trash and loose stones be reset in the masonry sidewalls. Existing gates should be examined to determine if they warrant refurbishing or if new gates should be fabricated. Features should be repaired to accommodate the re-watering of the canal through the tunnel. Construction cost estimates for restoration and repairs are included. Sketches and photographs show existing conditions.
