Mackintosh B. 1991. C & O Canal: The Making of a Park. National Park Service, History Division. Washington, D.C.
This report follows the development and administration of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park. It provides a brief summary of the C & O Canal's construction and details the government's struggle to obtain the land, including Great Falls, from the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad company in the 1930's and 40's. It also follows park maintenance and proposals for dams and roads within the park, including the Maryland side of the George Washington Memorial Parkway, now known as the Clara Barton Parkway.
