Benthic Sediment Collection and Processing for Laboratory Analysis for Coastal Assessments

Gregory MB. 2012. Benthic Sediment Collection and Processing for Laboratory Analysis for Coastal Assessments. National Park Service

This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) outlines the procedure for collecting benthic sediment samples for the laboratory analysis of metals, total organic carbon, grain size, benthic invertebrates and organic contaminates. The purpose of this SOP is to ensure that field teams are collecting data that are comparable for year-to-year as well as to data collected by other programs using the same or similar techniques. The techniques and procedures outlined in this SOP are based on the USEPA National Coastal Assessment Field Manual (2009) with much of the information presented here modified only slightly from USEPA instructions.
