The Jamestown Island, Glasshouse Point, and Neck of Land inventory unit is approximately 1,561 acres in size and is part of the Colonial National Historical Park (NHP). The project area is located approximately eight miles southwest of Williamsburg, Virginia, and is in James City County. Twenty-two and one-half acres of the Jamestown Island are owned by the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA) and are designated as the Jamestown National Historic Site. The inventory unit is accessed by car via the Colonial Parkway, which connects to the island over a bridged isthmus of land. Jamestown Island, Glasshouse Point, and Neck of Land contain both natural and cultural resources. These landscapes are bounded by the James and Back rivers and support a variety of plant and wildlife ecosystems. A majority of the project area is situated on Jamestown Island, which is mostly level and covered in pine-oak forest and wetlands. Glasshouse Point and Neck of Land are part of the mainland and are connected to the island by the isthmus. The project area is also considered historic vernacular landscapes and historic sites where historical events, cultural activities, and social trends were manifested over time in the physical appearance of the landscape. The importance of these landscapes can be seen in the archeological investigations that include the fortifications and remnant glassmaking operations, as well as in extant Civil War earthworks, grave sites, and intact early Mission 66-era designs.
