Brown NJ. 2025. Yorktown Village: Cultural Landscapes Inventory, Colonial National Historical Park. Cultural Landscapes Inventory Report. 300085. National Park Service. NPS Northeast Regional Office, Boston, Massachusetts / CRIS-CL Database
The Village of Yorktown is an approximately 130-acre site located in York County, Virginia on a peninsula located approximately 40 miles west of Norfolk. The Yorktown Unit of Colonial National Historical Park includes 4304.41 acres and is located near the park’s eastern side. The town is centered along Main Street, at around 50 feet above sea level, but rises to around 70 feet to the east and then falls to sea level along the banks of the York River to the north. York River bounds the town to the north, Ballard Street to the west and southwest, Buckner Street to the northwest and Zweybrucken Road and the Old Tobacco Road to the southeast. The Village of Yorktown today displays the influences of a lengthy period of evolution from the founding of the Village in 1691; to the American Revolution and Siege of 1781; to the Civil War encampments and harbor use, and the long period of preservation from the early post-Civil War efforts; to the Colonial influences of the preservation work of the 1930s; to the preservation efforts of the Mission 66 period. The Village of Yorktown landscape has been influenced by each of these periods of historical importance and change, and its physical character reflects that.
