The Fort Hancock Post Grounds is an approximately 138-acre site at the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. The study area is located in the northwest area of the peninsula, just south of the U.S. Coast Guard, Sandy Hook Station, an active Coast Guard base that is closed to the public. Sandy Hook, a recreational park that is open to the public, is well known for its expansive sandy beaches. The bulk of the peninsula’s landscape exists in a natural state, with dunes, native holly forests, and fresh and salt water marshes predominating. Contrasting with this setting, the Post Grounds include over 100 historic buildings and a designed landscape created in 1896. The Post Grounds are characterized by expanses of open lawn, uniformly styled buildings in a buff-colored brick, mature street trees, and sweeping views of Sandy Hook Bay. The study area is a component landscape of the Fort Hancock Military Reservation, or what the entire peninsula was known as when it was an active Army base, containing facililities that historically supported the garrison assigned to the Fort Hancock coastal batteries. The Post Grounds also include a few resources that were initially associated with the Sandy Hook Proving Ground and transferred to Fort Hancock after the Proving Ground’s deactivation in 1919.
