This study analyzes alternative ways of preserving, interpreting, and managing the resources of Essex County that can enhance the story to be told at Salem Maritime National Historic Site. This Study of Alternatives for the Salem Project identifies resources in Essex County that can enhance the story to be told at Salem Maritime National Historic Site and analyzes alternative ways of preserving, interpreting, and managing those resources. The study focuses on cultural resources; however, natural and scenic resources are also incorporated because of their importance to visitor understanding and appreciation of the area's cultural heritage. The purpose of this study is to provide adequate data so that Congress can make decisions concerning the future direction of the Salem Project. The study will provide the basis for determining the interpretive themes and geographic boundaries of the project and the type of management needed. This framework will guide all subsequent planning and development activities.
