Albright Grove is an old-growth stand in the northern Great Smoky Mountains. Known for its large tulip poplars, maples, and hemlocks, the stand is a popular destination of park visitors. The aesthetic qualities and floral diversity of this stand are common to primeval cove forests of the southern Appalachians. Old growth forests are often viewed as "climax" vegetation that is constant through time. Contemporary through in the field of vegetation science challenges this view. Many forest ecologists now recognize that changes occur even in old-growth forests.
