Detailed inventory of archive collection (89 boxes) related to natural resources in the Intermountain Region of NPS. Materials described include reports, proposals, correspondence, agreements, and more. Collection housed at Western Archeological and Conservation Center, Tucson, AZ. Prior to their arrival at the Intermountain Region Museum Services Program at the Western Archeological and Conservation Center (WACC) these files had been stored at a warehouse at the Denver Federal Center and the Intermountain Regional Office in Denver. The material is largely from the collection of the Chief Scientist collection of the Intermountain region. The Chief Scientist served as the principal advisor to the Regional Director on significant natural resource issues and over the years of this collection the position was held by Robert Schiller, Dan Huff, and Skip Ladd.In the mid 1990s the re-organization of the Department of the Interior, intended to assemble all natural resource science within the Unites States Geological Survey (USGS), resulted in the loss of the Chief Scientist position. However, much of the work performed by this division continued, accounting for the inclusion of materials from the early 2000s in the collection. This re-organization also changed the regional boundaries. Park units in North and South Dakota were transferred to the Midwest Region and these files were sent to Omaha rather than WACC. Other materials are the records of administering science projects at individual parks, including Natural Resources Preservation Programs (NRPP) and Special Emphasis Allocation System Records (SEPAS), and Research Proposals and Programs administered by Cooperation and Interagency Agreements. There is a large collection of documents relating to Grizzly Bears. Over the course of time the NPS was a key player in interagency science, planning, and management of the species. Records include those of the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (IGBC) meetings and records of subgroups of the IGBC.Final groups of materials contain Self Operation Evaluations (Self-OEs), designed to have a park consider its conditions and actions and make recommendations for the future; and a series of Resource Management Plans (RMPs) written in the 1990s.
