Victory Woods is one of five cultural landscapes that comprise Saratoga National Historical Park in Stillwater, New York. The park preserves the sites of two decisive American Revolutionary War battles between British and American forces in the autumn of 1777. It is widely documented that the American victory at Saratoga changed the momentum of the war, after which crucial support from the French was secured. Commemorative efforts by private citizens commenced shortly after the battles, culminating in the battlefield’s designation as a state-managed property in 1927, and later as a National Historical Park in 1938. Victory Woods was the final encampment site for the British Army under Lt. General Burgoyne prior to their October 17, 1777, surrender to American forces. Located in Victory, New York, the 22.78-acre, polygonal-shaped property is the last remaining remnant of the larger encampment that encompassed the Heights of Saratoga in 1777. The site overlooks Fish Creek, a tributary of the Hudson River and includes military earthworks, a park road/trail, twentieth century ruins of waterworks, and wetlands and a pond set under a forest canopy with pockets of dense understory vegetation. The site is bounded by NYS Route 32 to the east and private residential properties to the north, south, and west.
