The recreational potential and historical significance of the Santa Fe Trail are evaluated in this report. The Santa Fe Trail extended from Independence, Missouri, to Santa Fe, New Mexico. The trail has added historical significance because it was a segment of the route followed by the Mormon Battalion. The National Trails System Act lists 14 trails, including the Santa Fe Trail, to be studied to determine their suitability for inclusion in the National Trails System. The recreational potential and historical significance of the Santa Fe Trail are evaluated in this report.
