This study discusses the coastal sites of the Southeastern United States that the National Park Service interprets, protects, and preserves. Coastal fortifications have fascinated people for centuries. A vital and intriguing part of the American scene from the time the first European colonists landed until the present, they lure the visitor with the aura of romance from a bygone era and rich sense of history. These forts, in their architecture, weaponry, and use reflect many facets of our history from the 16th century until the atomic age. Scattered along the seacoast of the Southeastern United States, from Baltimore's Fort McHenry to Mississippi’s Ship Island, are numerous forts, batteries, and associated structures and sites. This study discusses those sites that the National Park Service interprets, protects, and preserves.
