In the mid-sixties, Chandler Robbins of the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, began the Breeding Bird Suvery in an effort to provide reliable, longterm information on breeding abundance of birds throughout the United States and Canada. Now, twenty years later, the Breeding Bird Survey has become an established monitoring tool. We know that qualified observers are willing to volunteer their time, year after year, to conduct the survey, and we know, from a variety of studies, that at least gross changes in abundance can be detected by the Survey. This research primary interest is to use the Survey to investigate the causes of change in abundance through space and time.
