The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Division of Scientific Authority is responsible for assessing the biological status of wild American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) and determining that exports will not be detrimental to the survival of the species. American ginseng was listed in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in 1975. Under the provisions of the CITES treaty, USFWS conducted an annual review of the trade and conservation status of American ginseng in the United States to determine whether export restrictions are necessary to conserve this species.
