From the introduction: "Mercury is problematic to study from several perspectives. Firstly, it is ubiquitous in the natural environment but is not uniformly distributed. Secondly, mercury is a multi-hop species in that it is volatile and when deposited can be re-volatilized only to be redeposited again elsewhere (the grasshopper effect or global distillation). Thirdly, mercury in the atmosphere exists in all three phases (solid/particle, liquid and gas) with most mercury (- 98%) present in the gas phase as elemental (HgO) mercury (Mason et al., 1994). Historically, the difficulties in measuring mercury are due to its relatively low concentration in the atmosphere (1.5 ng/m\ the ease in which contamination can occur, its propensity to exist in 3 phases and its ability to react with other chemical species (Schroeder et al., 1991). Technological advancements have provided an improved capacity for conducting accurate and precise total gaseous mercury measurements in the environment on broader spatial and finer temporal scales."
