At the Charlestown Navy Yard, Boston National Historical Park, there were at least five different anchor parks between 1834 and 1940. An anchor park is an area, often a grass plot, set aside for the storage of anchors. This document describes the location, features, and development of each of the anchor parks during this period. It includes existing conditions and recommendations. In tracing the different locations of the anchor parks at the Boston Navy Yard, the historical data and structural development sections will be combined, since they are interrelated. It was necessary to use photographs and maps as the primary sources in locating the parks, because there is very little written material on the anchor parks. A map of the Boston Navy Yard Anchor Parks with dates is included. This document is not intended to be a definitive study of Anchor Park.
