This map depicts the perimeters of fires in Yellowstone National Park (YNP) larger than 100 acres from 1881-2011. Due to increased availability of better mapping technologies and products, 2004 to present perimeters may include fires less than 100 acres in size. YNP fire files were researched by NPS firefighter/researcher Bob Flather. Superintendent and other reports were researched from 1881-1930 for maps and locational accounts of large fires. Individual Forest Fire Reports forms 1931-1970 were researched, entered into a database and queried for sizes larger than 100 acres. Shared Applications Computer System (SACS) database was queried for fires larger than 100 acres. Fire perimeters from Don Despain's Pre 1988 covertype/fire history were combined with other historic perimeter maps including Roy Renkin's master map, historic and other maps. Fire perimeters for 2000 through 2003 were derived from NBR satellite imagery by comparing areas before and a year after burns to detect change. All fires larger than 100 acres were matched with a perimeter map and attributed with a unique identifier for linking with future databases for each fire. **1988 Data for this dataset was created using Normalized Burn Ratio imagery product combinted with "Burned Area Survey" layer for the park. This combination gives a more accurate representation of unburned areas within the park, but most likely under- represents non-forested burn outside the park. This data layer is in process and has not cleared a final QA/QC.
