Planning is currently underway by the Cape Cod National Seashore in cooperation with the Denver Service Center to provide redevelopment options for both the landscape and building at the Satl Pond Visitor Center. Completed in 1965, as a part of the National Park Service Mission 66 program, the building and landscape are suffering many problems associated with age and increased visitor usage. Issues to be addressed include mechanical inadequacies, structural difficulties, and space limitations within the building. In addition, problems evident in the surrounding landscape include site accessibility, loss of integral views of Salt Pond from overgrown vegetation, and inadequacies in the location and design of the amphitheater that make it virtually unusable during the summer months. At the time of writing, the age of many of the Mission 66 facilities like the Salt Pond Visitor Center would soon allow them to be considered for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. To that date, there was no comprehensive documentation of this era of National Park Service construction which identified the significant features and appropriate treatment options for these facilities. “Mission 66: Contextual History of National Park Service Planning, Design, and Construction 1945-1972,” a two-year NPS study, provided a basis for determining the significance and landscape characteristics associated with this era of NPS work. The contemporary work that will be undertaken at Salt Pond is one of the first redevelopment projects to address the integrity and significance of a Mission 66 facility in the Northeast Region. This Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) and Historic Structure Report (HSR) will assist planners in examining the issues of significance and integrity as they apply them to the structures and cultural landscape of the Salt Pond site. These documents are intended to provide a basis for determining if these facilities have sufficient significance and integrity for National Register eligibility and how future development plans might proceed.
