Historical Base Map and Ground Study for Herbert Hoover National Historic Site. This report has been prepared to satisfy the research needs as enumerated in Historical Resource Study Proposal HEHO-H-3, Historical Base Map--Herbert Hoover, and HEHO-h-4, Grounds Study, Herbert Hoover. HEHO-H-3, Historical Base Map--Herbert Hoover--provides a graphic, documented account of West Branch in the period 1874-1886. This will assist the Superintendent and the Service to carry out its plan to restore the grounds in the core-area of Herbert Hoover National Historic Site to their appearance in the period 1874-1886. This report is also designed to provide the necessary historical and archeological data called for in HEHO-H-4 and necessary “to establish the landscaping theme of the core-area.” A number of persons have assisted in the preparation of this report. Particular thanks are due to Superintendent Larry Quist and Historian Glennie Murray for their assistance at the site; to Dick Jacobs and the staff of the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library for their cooperation in making valuable source materials entrusted to their safe keeping, available; to the West Branch heritage Foundation, to Mrs. Mildred Speight, and Sig Larson for copying and permitting me to use valuable photographs of early West Branch in their private collections.
