This study consists of three phases where the Big Sagebrush Shrub Steppe has been broken down into different subthemes. In Phase II, a total of seven sites from the states of Oregon, Washington, and Idaho were evaluated on the basis of illustrative character, condition, diversity, rarity, and value for science and education. Sites evaluated for the zonal soils subtheme included the Great Rift (10), Marcellus Shrub Steppe (WA), Substation Tract (IO), Jordan Craters Natural Area (OR), and Quincy Scabland (WA). Those evaluated for the specialized habitats subtheme included the Great Rift (10), Juniper Dunes (WA), Substation Tract (IO), and Vernita Shrub Steppe (WA). On the basis of this evaluation, the Great Rift was chosen to be most illustrative of both subthemes. It was agreed that the Phase IiI product of this study would be a single site evaluation of the national significance of the Great Rift with respect to both subthemes of the 8ig Sagebrush Shrub Steppe theme.
