This report is based on a field study and is a recommendation that Smith Island be added to the National Park System as Cape Fear National Monument. The suggested monument offers a nationally significant opportunity to preserve and protect a rare undeveloped coastal area for public use and enjoyment. The Smith Island portion of the suggested national monument is one of the few remaining areas on the Atlantic Coast where man’s effect on the landscape has been relatively limited. The campaign to preserve and protect Smith Island, started half a century ago by a few voices, has recently been greatly intensified.
