This Standard Operating Procedure explains the quality assurance and control procedures as part of the implementation of the automated recording device component of the Southeast CoastNetwork’s amphibian community monitoring protocol. All recognizer “hits” must be confirmed and certified as true vocalizations, via a quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) process, prior to certification as useable data. A “hit’ is defined as the detection of a target vocalization. Two QA/QC procedures are applied to the Song Scope software results: 1) discriminating between true positive and false positive hits, and 2) evaluating the efficacy of the recognizers by determining false negative rates. Discriminating between true positive and false positive hits, which is described in this SOP, occurs simultaneously in the SECN Data Management System (DMS) and Song Scope software, and evaluating the efficacy of the recognizers by determining false negative rates occurs outside the DMS, is recorded on a temporary spreadsheet, and is transposed to the recognizer metadata. Evaluating the efficacy of the recognizers (i.e., false negative rates) is discussed in SOP 1.4.20 – Manual Evaluation of Audio Files (Byrne 2012).
