Bearss EC. 1974. Ewing (Snell) and ML Ranches, and Hillsboro: Historical Data Section, Historic Structure Report and Historic Resource Study, Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area. Historic Structure Report. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Denver Service Center Historic Preservation Team. Denver, Colorado

This is the historical data section of the Historic Structure Report and Historic Resource Study for the Ewing (Snell) Ranch, ML Ranch, and Hillsboro. This comprehensive report provides management staff with a structural history of the structures, museum specialists with data needed for Furnishing Studies, and interpretive personnel with material useful in explaining to park visitors the significance of the three properties and the individuals involved. The structures at the Ewing (Snell) Ranch (house, Dryhead Schoolhouse, and chicken house) were erected by one of the first European American settlers to the area. Their exteriors were planned to be restored to their appearance c. 1945, and interiors were to be modified and modernized to serve park operations. The Hillsboro (Cedarvale) complex includes the Barry stud barn and corral, Hillsboro Post Office, Eddie Hulbert's Shop and Dude Cabin, big and small chicken houses, milk house, Eddie Hulbert's Cabin, and root cellar. Exteriors were to be restored to their appearance c. 1916, and two would be furnished to reflect their use during this period. The ML Ranch complex consists of the bunkhouse, the blacksmith shop, the north cabin, and the south cabin. The exteriors would be restored to their appearance c. 1903, and the bunkhouse interior would be restored and refurnished to reflect its use during this period. Corrals that had been removed in 19070 would be rebuilt. The report includes information about the development of the properties, personal interviews, structural descriptions, census information, and plate photos.
