Initiated by Montana State University, submitted to the National Science Foundation. Aimed at obtaining data from a range of sites both north-south and east-west, to aid in the analysis of factors influencing bresence and abundance of species. At each station the description began with a definition and delimitation of the principal plant communities, and their analysis. Vertebrate animal populations were then studied with special reference to this framework of plant ecology. Soils were investigated in the same way. Less detailed, but useful, observations were made on frost-forms, phenology, invertebrate life and the effects of himan activity.
