Research for this report entailed field investigations of Dry Dock 1 and visits to key archival collections, including original drawings for the dry docks. This research highlights the major historical events in the development of U.S. Navy dry docks and Loammi Baldwin's role in the design and construction of the docks. The key changes to Charlestown’s Dry Dock 1 are also discussed, with a focus on the dock's character defining features. The structural and architectural fabric that constitutes these features is tied to the broader period of historical significance of the dock, namely its years in active service as a U.S. Navy facility (1800-1974). Also notable are the roles of historically important naval officers and secretaries, as well as the role of the dock's engineers in the development and growth of the Charlestown Navy Yard. Based on this research, the report makes recommendations for treatment and use.
