Starting in 2002 based on a personal interest in the Press Expedition, Press Expedition Three-Chops blazes were searched for and photographed during a number of visits to the Elwha Valley (Appendix A). To better identify areas to search, the Press Expedition route was divided into Survey Sectors (Appendix B). Sectors that were inspected prior to the initiation of data collection include D-E (Little River to Griff Creek), I-J (Winslow Spring to Idaho Creek), M-P (Bowman Creek to Stony Creek). Detailed notes were taken on trees with probable blazes. Since these trees are now mature, it became imperative to systematically survey the Press blazes while they survived. Removal of the dams on the Elwha River might have potential to impact the known blazed trees. Alternatively, the stumps remaining in the drained reservoirs might yield more blazes. All these factors contributed to the timeliness of performing a systematic survey of known Three-Chops blazes.
