Aquatic macroinvertabrate vital signs monitoring. The primary objective of the Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Monitoring Program at Shenandoah is to determine changes in aquatic insect diversity in relation to changes in water chemistry and flow (flood and drought) effects on streams. Because aquatic insects are numerous, have short life cycles, are directly affected by chemistry and flow changes, and are easily sampled, they are excellent indicators of aquatic ecosystem health. Concurrently the program allows documentation of species diversity and abundance as previously unsampled streams are examined. Parameters Measured: Water: temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, total dissolved solids, discharge. Habitat (every 10 meters): width, depth, substrate, pool to riffle ratio, %riparian cover, riparian cover type, % fish cover, % debris retention. Aquatic Macroinvertebrates: total 4 samples per site - 3 samples (Portable Invertebrate Box Sampler or Surber Sampler), 1 D-Net sample (all micro habitats in the reach).
