Fisheries vital signs monitoring. This data set contains a mixture of fisheries data from mountain stream habitat in Shenandoah National Park from 1982-present. From 1982 to 1993, the gamefish table includes single pass electrofishing data from the suite of streams and sites that were monitored during that period. Trout weights were not recorded and lengths were rounded to the nearest 5mm. The nongame fish table was simply used to document the presence of other species. In 1994 and 1995, there are both quantitative or three-pass electrofishing data and the older single pass data. Game fish weights were recorded for all species in 1994 at all sites. Beginning in 1996, the program was revised with most streams and sites sampled quantitatively using three-pass techniques. Exact lengths were recorded to the nearest 1.0mm, all trout are individually measured and weighed. Nongame fish are sorted by species in each of the three runs. Nongame fish are counted and mass weighed by species. The smallest and largest fish of each species from each run are measured to provide a range of lengths and the number of morts or dead fish are counted by species for each run. The qualitative or single pass data were used to provide a relative index of brook trout size and age classes and the presence of other fish species in Park streams. The quantitative data of 1994 and 1995 were used as a pilot effort to transition from single pass to multipass electrofishing techniques. The quantitative data from 1996 to the present were used to generate population estimates, density and biomass for gamefish and nongame fish from 40 monitoring sites along 18 streams annually. These streams represent the range of watershed geologic types and associated water chemistry ranges in the park. Parameters Measured: Water temperature, pH, DO, conductivity, discharge, gamefish species (length and weight), nongame fish species (count, min/max length and mass weight) and habitat. Habitat measurements include stream cross-section widths, water depth, substrate and pool/riffle ratios at 10 meter intervals throughout each stream transect. Most transects are approximately 100m.
