Zooplankton assemblages from mountain lake study sites in the North Coast and Cascades Network: 2009 field season report

As part of the development of the draft North Coast and Cascades Network Mountain Lake Monitoring Protocol, the zooplankton communities of 18 subalpine lakes, 6 at Mount Rainier National Park, 6 at North Cascades National Park Service Complex, and 6 at Olympic National Park, were sampled during August through September of 2009. Samples were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level and data were analyzed via multivariate community techniques. During the 2009 ice-free season, the zooplankton community structure of each park was distinctly different. Mount Rainier and North Cascades zooplankton communities were numerically dominated by rotifers, driven largely by the genera Conochilus and Keratella, while Olympic communities were numerically dominated by cladocerans. The cladoceran Holopedium gibberum, found almost ubiquitously across Mount Rainier lakes, was found only in Mount Rainer. Mount Rainier lakes had the most taxa (average of 11.2 ± 1.7), while Olympic lakes had the fewest (average of 7.2 ± 2.8). NOCA lakes had an average of 9.0 ± 2.3 taxa. These data suggest that there are regional differences within the NCCN in species pools and factors that structure zooplankton communities.
