This report summarizes sagebrush steppe monitoring conducted in 2012 within the Clarno unit of John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. This 2012 survey effort was outside of the Upper Columbia Basin Network's 3-year revisit schedule for sagebrush steppe monitoring, and was added in response to the August 2011 wildfire that swept through the Clarno unit. Approximately 98% of the vegetated portion of the Clarno unit was burned by this fire. This report describes briefly the findings from 2012, and provides some comparisons in the abundance of key principal species of interest between 2011 (pre-burn) and 2012. The effects of fire on Monument upland plant communities is of critical importance to park management.
