A survey of beetles in Catoctin Mountain Park. Species richness and relative abundance of targeted Coleoptera were sampled at fifteen sites in Catoctin Mountain Park with pitfall traps from 5 April through 3 November 2011. Fifteen consecutive two-week pitfall trap accumulations were taken. The coleopteran families identified to species included Carabidae, Scarabaeidae, Geotrupidae, Trogidae, Tenebrionidae and Silphidae. Carabidae were the most abundant (3,800) and species rich (67) of the targeted families. Silphidae followed in abundance (1,019) represented by five species. Scarabaeidae totaled 523 (17 spp.), Geotrupidae with 219 (5 spp.), Tenebrionidae with 55 (8 spp.), and nine Trogidae represented by a single species. The carabid species richness was compared with regional surveys and concluded, based in part on sampling effort, the park’s species richness for its size was high, and may be the result of the present diversity of forest types at different stages of succession.
