Experimental releases of two insect species, the leaf beetle Diorhabda elongata from central Asia and the mealybug Trabutina mannipara from Israel, at 13 sites in 7 western states, for biological control of saltcedars (Tamarix ramosissima and T. parviflora), exotic, invading shrubs or small trees native across central Asia and in Southern Europe. Insects released into secure field cages during first year and allowed to disperse naturally outside the cages during subsequent 2 years. Objectives: To determine the ability of released insects to establish on saltcedar in various climatic-ecological zones represented at the different release sites. To determine the natural mortality factors, rate of population increase, seasonal reproductive history, and rate of dispersal of the control insects. To measure feeding, oviposition, reproduction and damage produced on saltcedar and on any non-target plant species. To determine the rapidity of control of saltcedar and any potential need for revegetation of willows and/or cottonwoods or for other habitat rehabilitation in areas where southwestern willow flycatcher presently is nesting .
